I picked up a brochure from a local bike shop about the "California
Tour North", sponsored by the Sacramento Bee, to be held April 27
through May 1. This is a 5 day, 250 mile ride from Sacramento to San
Francisco, via Lake Berryessa, Napa Valley, Russian River, Sonoma, Pt.
Reyes, and the Golden Gate. Cost is $125 for camping and gear
transportation. You're on your own for food.
This has apparently been going on for a few years. Has anyone done it
in the past? What kind of crowd do they have? How well organized is
it? It sounds like fun.

John Pollard and I did that a couple of years ago. At that time there
were only about 50-75 riders, and I think it was there first year.
Other than the first day, the riding is through some really beautiful
areas. Plus, that time of year the mountains are all very green. I
thought they did a great job, although John and I finished a little
too early a couple of days. The showers-in-a-trailer were hot and
very nice!
The first day is flat as Florida, so you may want to spend some time
in Davis. Otherwise, there is normally a crit in Winters. You could
ride over early, then do a crit.
The other days are on rolling type hills....usually 1000 ft or less.
Nothing really tough.
I would definately recommend it.

Good description. I really appreciated the hot showers. An idea
is percolating. Perhaps a few Shaw's/GCC riders (and spouses?) would be
interested in taking the long way to and from the Winters criterium this
year. What's the phone # to get the propaganda?

Phone numbers are (916)758-8782 and (800)228-7041.
I hear that they had 600 riders last year and are trying for 1000 this
year. You should try to register by the end of March, as they will
close the registration if they hit 1000.
