| 1323.1 | New Sutherland's will have it. | TALLIS::JBELL | Personna Au Gratin | Tue Oct 03 1989 12:42 | 20 |
| | This just arrived in the mail yesterday.
        Sutherland's
        HANDBOOK FOR BICYCLE MECHANICS
        5th Edition
        Pre-Publication price $70.
        FRS Jan 15,1990
    "Entirely new, in-depth section covering INDEXED SHIFTING. For the
     first time, accurate information on how to adjust, service, and repair
     index systems from Shimano, SunTour, Sachs, and Campy..."
    "Revised spoke length tables with the LATEST RIM TYPES..."
    Admittedly, it is not a how-to book. It's an unrivalled
    reference book.

| 1323.3 | Repair book w/directions? | RUSTIE::NALE | The other line moves faster. | Thu May 23 1991 16:48 | 12 |

	I'd like to try to revive this note. I'm looking to buy a good
	repair book that gets pretty in-depth in its explanations. It
	doesn't sound like the mechanics handbook mentioned in the previous
	replies explains exactly HOW to make repairs, which is what I'm
	looking for. (And $70 is a little steep!) Also, looking at the tools
	in the biking catalogs, sometimes I have no clue what they're used for!
 	If the book listed the basic tools everyone should have, then listed
	the ones needed for specific repairs, it should would help!
	Thanks,
	Sue

| 1323.4 | Barnett's Manual for Bicycle Mechanics | DECWET::BINGHAM | John Bingham | Thu May 23 1991 19:36 | 7 |
| | Or something like that. But it costs $95 list.
Pictures of tools and how to use them in detail. Used in the courses that
Barnett teaches.
The updated bicycle maintenance book from "Bicycling" magazine is a pretty good
step-by-step. It even appears on local book stores and bicycle shops.

| 1323.5 | get a book that matches your components | OXNARD::KLEE | Ken Lee | Tue May 28 1991 17:57 | 7 |
| | Make sure the book matches the equipment on your bike. Many bikes
    these days come with indexed shifters, sealed bearings, clipless
    pedals, and all the weird stuff on mountain bikes. Few books have good
    info on maintaining/repaing components like this.

    Does anyone have a copy of Barnett's Repair Manual that I could borrow?

    I an interested in the wheel building section. If you didn't want to
    send me the whole book, maybe you could send a copy of that section.

    At the moment I do not have the $75.00 to buy the manual.
