Franks Spoke n' Wheel in Framingham Carries ROLA.

I bought a Yakima rack and two bike carriers last year.

    	RACK $65.00 65.00
    	bike adapters	$49.95@ 99.90
    					164.90

I doubt they doubled in price since last year. Your dealer must
have been quoting the Gold plated version.

ROLA is twice as expensive as Yakima, I believe Performance carries
    this brand. (go with Yakima!!!!)

I'm not sure on prices but, ROLA looks better on the Taurus, like it belongs.
If you have such a nice car get a good rack.
Bicycle Alley in Worcester has ROLA racks.

| | My entire Thule rack cost me about $175. I bought it last
summer at Sunshine Sports in Nausea, Nude Hampster.

    	Caveat: Your prices may vary...

| | I bought a Yakima rack *last week*. Got the SST rack, locking knobs,
set up for 2 bikes. Cost me $239. I don't think you're being quoted
the gold plated version, I think yours must be solid gold!

| | I think Nashbar carries Thule and Rola. I don't know what their
prices are. There was a long discussion of bike racks on the
usenet last year, and near unanimity that the Yakima was better
than the Thule. I don't remember why, but I've never seen anything
that that group agreed on as much as they agreed on a preference
    for Yakima.

No they don't, they used to a couple of years ago but not anymore.

| | REI (Recreational Equipment Inc.) carries Yakima. They give a
rebate to members (membership costs $5 or $10 to join) which is
often around 8%. The Yakima still isn't cheap. REI has a store in
Wakefield or Reading or somewhere around there on 128.

| | Cycle Goods (612 872-7600) is having a sale on most Yakima parts.
10% off prices that are slightly below REI's, and no tax in MA.
They're a reasonably good place to deal with, not as fast in
shipping or as slick a computer system as Nashbar, but more
knowledgeable sales people, and a much larger catalog. They do
have an 800 number, but I don't have it with me.

| | Greetings fellow bikers,

Well the votes are in and I made a decision...and it wasn't pretty,
    I'll explain.

LESSON #1 Nothing lowers prices like competition

I went back to the place I bought my bike armed with the facts like
what the rest of you payed for Yakima's. I got nowhere the 19 year
old was lost the manager who really didn't want to be bothered so
I went to another place and they only sold it for list price. It
called no competition. I really wanted the rola rack anyway and
the price was $20.00 cheaper in the Yakima.

LESSON #2 Thats why you guys (persons) use catalogs

I called Rola and got the information for a roof rack. Called the
local dealer and it was like pulling teeth to get him order the
d*() thing but he did and I have to pay like $10.00 to get the rack
in 2 days also the store is about 30 miles way the heck out of the
way but what the heck the rack is what I wanted. Well God must have
needed a laugh because when I got home there was Performance. Sure
enough the rack was $5.00 cheaper and it could be delivered to my
house in two days for $4.95. I had ordered Performance several weeks
ago so of course it gets there a few hours late.

    LESSON #3

Dealers aren't worth beans for advice. This cycling hobby is best
understood by cyclists. All the dealers appear to want to sell is
what they have on their shelves. I think I learned that the brand
    name and reputation is everything.

    Thanks for the information.
