    Is anyone out there planning on going to the Midwest RAAM Open this
    year and potentially interested in splitting costs of a support
    van?  According to UMCA brochures I found at Nashbar yesterday it
    is officially set for July 22-24.
    
    A little info for the unfamiliar: RAAM Opens are the way people
    qualify to ride RAAM (Race Across AMerica).  The Midwest is 600
    miles long, in 29 mile figure 8s.  Support is excellent, food is
    provided with the fee ($135 early, $150 after that).  You have
    to finish within 60 hours to be an official qualifier but you'd
    probably have to finish in the neighborhood of 35 hours to 
    actually qualify for RAAM given last years finish.  
    
    Its a little close in time but for people who are going to ride
    Boston-Montreal-Boston, its a great way to get accustomed to the
    distance (though not the intensity because its much more solidly
    supported and not very hilly).

	Yeah, I was going to talk to you anyway. Support in the form of a van to have parts, batteries, food, Ultra-Energy, clothes, a matress for sleeping, towels, etc. in. I think I'm going to bring a support person also but there needs to be someplace for that to all be. You gain a lot by having one, basically all the top finishers have them out of necessity. I'm not sure if its possible to get everything there without driving a van out but thats what I'd like to do. Then rent it in Chicago, load it and drive it out to Capron.

	I'll be there! Not racing though.... I'll probably be one of the amateur radio communications team... I believe the course passes 1 block from my house. If there's anything I can do to help those of you Digits who are going to compete, let me know! I don't have a course map, but I believe it runs along River Road, crossing Rt. 23 north of Marengo. I live a block north of there along Rt. 23 (for what it's worth!) Looking forward to it (as a spectator)!

	You live in Capron, IL? I'm both amazed and impressed. Do you have any spare bedrooms :^)? Seriously though, did you just move there? I mean, I did it last year and it seemed like the whole town was doing support (and I couldn't have been far off). Don't see how anyone could have missed it had they been there. Anyway, hope its true, I'll look forward to seeing you.

	No, I don't live in Capron, IL, I live in Marengo, IL. I didn't get a chance to help out last year, but I got involved the year before working communications at the Hawthorn School checkpoint. Since then I've gotten a bike (non-racing!) and have been slugging it out on the mag trainer all winter. I'm down 19 lbs now and really looking forward to summer!!!! The wife has asked for a new bike for her birthday this March, so maybe we can do a few hundred miles together this summer. I'll probably ride the race route, but not when the race is in progress. The year I worked communications, I rode my old bike down from my house to the checkpoint. The bike got a lot of strange looks. Lots of people hadn't seen one of the old Raleighs with the 28" wheels and rod brakes before!!!
