Is anyone in the London/Reading area interested in taking part in
the Audi 100 bike ride? This is a charity ride from Bristol/Bath
to London (115/103 miles resp.) on August the 30th. Not a race.
I'd quite like to try this, but the problem is getting to Bristol;
the organisers aren't offering transport there. Going by rail on
the day would mean a very early start, going the previous day would
involve an overnight stay and consequent expense.
I can send copies of the application form (entry fee is three pounds)
to anyone who's interested.
I work in Reading, DTN 830 6705.

Sounds interesting.
Whats the charity? I'm not a great biker myself, last ride was Reading
to London! I think the Bath option would be better for me. As you
say transport is a problem. I reckon circular rides are better.
Anyway if you can drop me a form to;
Howard Easton G/3-2 REO.
Look forward to hearing from you.

Well, I've been so dismayed recently by the small but imperfectly
formed gut that I've grown since I bought a car, that I did this
ride. I solved the problem of getting to Bath (from Reading, about
70 miles) by cycling there the previous day - do I get brownie points
for this?
The ride was 103 miles from Bath (or Bristol for the keen people,
115 miles) to Hampton Court (part of Greater London). About 600
people took part.
The first 40 miles was cool and misty; as I wear glasses I couldn't
see a thing for condensation. Then it became sunny and warm. I've
never seen so much high-quality machinery together outside a race,
probably at least 50% 531-framed bikes. The final parts of the ride
were flat, busy and boring, with bumpy road surfaces - in fact this
single ride bent my back wheel more than 16 months of commuting
in Manchester.
I enjoyed the ride a lot, I came through better than I had feared.
It was good cycling with other people, I got in with similarly-speeded
cyclists a few times, so my average speed was higher than cycling
the shorter distance the previous day. And I definitely passed more
people than passed me!
