vs. company provided vehicles for private use, such as them having to be made 
available to other employees most of the time, etc...

|  |     My brother in law used to work for southern electric and his company
    vehicle was a medium sized truck with a Simon Snorkel cradle on the
    back! He had this all the time (it really annoyed his neighbours when
    he parked it out front). I'll have to ask him if he was charged company
    car tax on it!

    was that it seems that the "van" ain't necessarily what you might

    Many years ago,I worked as a service engineer for Rank Xerox.We got 
    Astra Estates and paid tax on them,plus a fuel card also. There was
    also the choice of a signwritten Astra Diesel van which avoided the
    tax implications . Not many takers curiously enough...
