    	In the new issue of "Diesel Car and 4x4" magazine (arrived yesterday
    for my subscription one) it gives details of a legal way of reducing
    one's tax on company vehicle quite dramatically.
    
    	Apparently one may have the commercial (ie. Van) version of a 4x4
    and only �500.00 tax irrespective of company milage AND the company (or
    the leasing company) can reclaim the VAT (unlike the situation with
    cars).  There is a comparative test of the Daihatsu Fourtrack van
    conversion and the Land Rover Defender commercial version in the same
    article.  There was mention of there being a "commercial" version of
    the Land Rover Discovery as well.
    
    	It wasn't clear to me if the �500.00 tax was the amount paid or the
    amount "knocked off" one's allowances, but it seems to make for a
    substantial tax saving if one wanted a 4x4 and weren't worried about
    only having the front seats and no rear seats (or side windows).
    
    	Interesting article anyway, especially to me wot don't pay such
    tax.

	From what I understand, there're various rules regarding commercial vehicles vs. company provided vehicles for private use, such as them having to be made available to other employees most of the time, etc... Chris.

	My brother in law used to work for southern electric and his company vehicle was a medium sized truck with a Simon Snorkel cradle on the back! He had this all the time (it really annoyed his neighbours when he parked it out front). I'll have to ask him if he was charged company car tax on it! Tony I

	So are we saying that if you have a company van you will be taxed on 500 pounds a year regardless of business mileage ? Royston

	It certainly seems that way Royston and the point I was offering was that it seems that the "van" ain't necessarily what you might think. Malcolm.

	Many years ago,I worked as a service engineer for Rank Xerox.We got Astra Estates and paid tax on them,plus a fuel card also. There was also the choice of a signwritten Astra Diesel van which avoided the tax implications . Not many takers curiously enough... Mick
