| | Hi,
I have recently taken delivery of a Cavalier CDX 1.7TD and am a little
concerned about it's running temperature. It never seem to get that
hot (the gauge always shows <90 degrees). Is this usual for TD engines
or should I be getting this sorted?? Surely the engine is not
performing at its best if it consistently runs cool.? Or is this
    different for diesel engines?
    Thanks,
    Paul.

| | Once hot, the temperature guage in my 1.7TD remains in the lower
quarter of the dial. My old 2.0L cavvy exhibited the same
characteristics. Then, stick it in a traffic jam and watch the guage
rise (until the elctric fan cuts in).

No, I would say you have a typical Cavalier there.

| | This is definately normal behaviour. My Cav TD also runs normal at
just below 90. Mind you when pulling a caravan it soon hots up.

    Don't worry about it.

| | What temp do petrol engines normally run at as I didn't think 90 was
    particularly 'cool'.

I think 90 (where'd you get that little degree sign from I ain't got
one! 8*) ) is about normal I seem to remember thermostats in the low to mid
eighties, but they tend to run them a bit hotter these days to get the
    emissions right.

Yes, modern engines do run warmer than older engines. I read
this in the Kenlowe fan literature when I fitted one to the
Marlin. That's why more modern cars have a higher pressure
rating on their radiator cap's than old ones (eg my MG). I
presume that the engine is happy because of advances in
	machining and oil technology.

| | How do you know the engine runs at 90 degrees ? My engine runs really
really hot cos it has lots of little explosions in it :-) However, the
temperature of the water is 90 somethings according to a little needle
in one of the displays on the dashboard.

| | Have any Cavalier TD drivers ever come across this problem:

When I'm accelerating, and generally pushing the engine in lower gears,
a very odd noise comes up from the engine. It sounds like dry leaves
rattling around in the ventilation system, thats the only way I can
think of describing it. I've checked through the engine, and I can't
find any obvious problems. I even managed to duplicate the noise
when revving the engine with the car stationary.

    Hmmm

My TD is far too noisy to notice a sound like dry leaves!
