| 2295.1 | Senna's Mclaren | YUPPY::PATEMAN | Waiting for the Great Leap Forward | Mon Aug 08 1994 08:28 | 9 |
| | I bought the Ayrton Senna McLaren advertised a few weeks back but it
wasn't from these people. However, the quality is superb and it comes
mounted on a nice sloping presentation plinth. The detail is excellent.
The car is as it appeared at Donington right down to the squashed
hedgehog (sonic style!) on the cockpit side. This is particularly
fitting since Donington was the last time we saw him race and one of
    his greatest races.

| | Paul,I checked back last night over the recent issues of Motor Sport
and Autosport and you were right (not that you ever doubted it!).
There are two company's running adverts which are very similar (which
confused me).I believe the one which you bought from was called aero
something, they are the ones who are also selling Damon Hills car for
    34 (not the real one).
     So you would recommend them....

| | Tyrone,

Aero Models were excellent. I ordered via phone & Visa card and the
model arrived guaranteed delivery within 5 days, well packed and in
perfect order. As I said, the quality was excellent.

they do not include cigarette decals on the models?

| 2295.8 | Probably a combinatin of... | SUBURB::MCDONALDA | Shockwave Rider | Mon Nov 21 1994 13:18 | 20 |
| | The most obvious reason would be the sensitive issuee of cigarette
advertising; though somebody with more knowledge can confirm or deny
    this.

There is, however, another trend in the model world (in general) which
may partly explain this. The decals, being exact copies of company
logos, are trademarks. Nowadays, companies are very zealous in
protecting their trademarks, even when applied to models.

Some companies are sensible about this. They realise they are getting
free advertising, at an impressionable audience. So they license their
logos for a nominal fee (i.e. less than the value of the paper the
license is printed on) to the model companies.

Other companies are less sensible about this, and see the licensing of
their logos as a way to make money and ask for ridiculous amounts of
money. Needless to say, the model companies don't give a monkey's for
all this, and so choose to leave out the particular logo.

| | What suprised me by the adverts was that Minichamps,Onyx etc are now
excluding the decals, and yet if you buy a Tamiya plastic kit they have
    them included,but some other model company's don't.

| | I agree with .8 Both explanations are valid.

BTW, not only tobacco manufacturers do license their product logos but
the teams/car manufacturers also do. The model car business is getting
    tough.

| | .8 The most obvious reason would be the sensitive issuee of cigarette
.8 advertising;
This is the main reason. I know someone in Bruxelles who is a *keen*
    Scaletrix(sp?) collector/enthusiast. I have attended a few swap-meets
with him in the past, and he has said that UK models are not allowed
to have the cigarette adverts on them.
However, he showed me that the Spanish models do infact carry the
proper adverts, and in a collector's eyes, some were worth buying.

| | I believe that there is a Scalextric set up in Spain. I have a Lancia
Stratos, and a Ford Mustang Funny Car (dragster) form there (which I
bought in Denmark :-), neither of which I had seen in this country
    (about 10 years ago).

The wheels / drivetrain / motors were different from the standard
    British ones as well.

The boxes might have an address on, but they're at my parents so it may
be a few months before I can check.

| | Tyrone,

You might wish to check some of the Car Magazines
especially ones like IndyCar Review (the official US magazine),
as it seems US model companies can put all the advertising on
their cars they like. I have seen advertisments for the FW16
    with Rothmans on it.

I guess you could always buy the WAV003 Marlboro Decals
from Tamiya and add them to the Indy Penskes by Pauls Model Art or
the 1993 Onyx Mclarens. I would have thought it would devalue the
cars in years to come. You can also get WAV001 Camel logos from
    Tamiya as well.

| | Hi Tyrone,

Have you tried going to model fairs that are held all over the country
??? There are good ones at the NEC and Donnigton but the same
type of shows are all over the country. You can get all sorts of model
stuff there from Action man cloths to Scalextric (phonecards ! dolls !
    teddy bears ! ) etc.

If you like I can dig out the dates for the NEC / Donnington and post
them here over the next few days.

Andy, if you are interested in Scalextric cars then I recommend that
you go 'cause you get a very good selection of new/used cars, track,
etc from Hornby (Scalextric) Tyco, Ninco, SCX (Spanish cars now bust,
but bought out by Tyco) as well as a few other thigs like kits to build
for slot racing. ( guess I am a model fan 'cause I carn't afford the
    real thing !! )

Below is the details for a company called Hannants who have a
massive warehouse and deal in every type of plastic model kit
you can imagine. They have a huge catalogue which among other
things has the entire listing for Tamiya models which includes
part numbers WAVE01 "Camel" logo decals for 1:20,1:24,1:12
and WAVE03 "Marlboro" decals for 1:20,1:24,1:12 scale models.
I have mail ordered some of the decals and they are ok for 1:43
scale cars as well. They are 7.99 and 6.99 respectively.

The Catalogue is 2.25 and covers most types of ships, planes, cars
figures and decals, plus odds and sods from most manufacturers of
kits. They have a good mail order system, but a strange off the
cuff way of dealing with you on the phone.

Incidentally I have been getting the IndyCar mag imported from the
US so I guess you may find it difficult finding the mag, although
it is meant to be available over here.

Certainly the first 12 cars plus some others from the 1994 Indy
Grid have been advertised in it as Die Cast 1:24 with the proper
        advertising on them.
