That's generally true, although you may have some luck near airports. I can't
tell you the price of diesel in Italy but I can tell you that garages in Italy
will try to rip you off. Always ask for a receipt because they can get slapped
wrists if you report them with evidence.

| | Re the receipt, you can be fined if you don't have reciept. This
applies everything, even to having a coffee or beer in a Cafe. Keep an eye
out for the Garda Finanzia (sp?) ie the Finance Police.

| 1814.6 | Mind the "hold back the note trick".. | VOGON::MACDERMOTT |  | Wed Jul 08 1992 10:07 | 17 |

Funny enough we found Amex accepted in enough garages so that we didn't
need to use much folding stuff... it was touch and go in places
    though..

re: being ripped off... we found garages ok but the guys on tolls are
bas%*#ds.. usual trick is not to show the amount due then linger over
handing back the change, keeping the biggest note until you ask for
it..... this technique is even mentioned in a guide book we read
    afterwards !!..

You know you can get petrol coupons at the border of course ?.. think
you need the log book .. it's a small discount .. 10% or so..

And good luck with the driving ...:-)

Thanks for the inputs. Looks like I'll be filling up in France and
    counting my change!

    Thanks again,
