    Take a look in this weeks Autocar and motor. They have a report on the
    new ZX 1.9 turbo diesel.
    
    Looks good 92bhp @ 4,000 rpm, 148lb/ft @ 2250rpm( with 130+@1750rpm)  
    It does 0-60 in 10.3, 115mph all with 50+ mpg.

    sounds great....alas I don't have the cash for that sort of machine. 
    A basic diesel advantage costs �12,800 over here (Ireland), for that you 
    get four wheels and power steering, no sunroof, no central locking

    Whats stopping you buying it here in the UK? Assuming you have got the

    Probably have to pay some sort of import tax to Eire much the same
    as you do to the U.K. when you buy a car in mainland Europe and then 
    bring it to the U.K.

    I think Golf diesel is equipped with that eco diesel 1.9 litre.

    In short, covered elsewhere in detail, I would have to pay 20% of Irish
    list price (12,800) in excise duty PLUS 21% VAT on purchase price.
    
    Buy it for 10,000 (no VAT)

    I understand that the base price (no duty or VAT) of many cars is
    cheaper in Ireland (reduced feature models) so that we can afford to

    Not sure what criteria you have but I'd think about second-hand values.
    The Veedubs certainly seem to have a good track record in this area so
    if it's return that concerns you I'd pick that. If it's out and out
    speed I think the Citro�n comes out on top, it may also be slightly 
    quieter both inside and from without. 
    
    The various rags I've read have slated the Golf interior as being
    boring but that is very much in the eye of the beholder. There are
    certainly not vary many optional extras so here too the ZX scores.
    
    Lastly I'd call the service agents and check out the likely charges
    for regular oil etc changes.

    I went for a drive in a Golf last night, it is a real truck compared to
    the ZX (loud, heavy and slow). It feels really strong and well put 
    together but the biggest plus factors are probably the second hand value 
    and the reliability.
    
    The ZX has better looks (says my wife), faster aceleration and a quieter 
    engine.
    
    I also went to see the Astra diesel, horrible !
    
    I think we will be having a Golf....
    
    
    

Did you see the Astra Turbo diesel?, a different engine so maybe better.

The non-turbo ZX diesel you can get in the reflex trim also.

What about the AX or BX,  Pug 205,  309, or 405 all good cars and good 
engine's (the same, except for the AX which has the TUD 1.4 engine, now going 
into the metro!).

    I have the BX 19TGD which is a fleet car and I'm pleased with (in fact
    my second). It's due for replacement July 93, but I definitely will go
    for another diesel. Having had 2 BX's I'm tempted to try something else
    next time, though I love the quirkiness of the BX , niether of which
    have ever let me down. 
    
    In addition to the above mentioned how is the Renault 19 Diesel ?
    
    I test drove the GTD Golf , but rejected it as ity did'nt come with
    power steering and the BX did. maybe I'm a wimp but a Golf without p/s
    is not on for me, Shame as I confer with the previous results i.e. well
    built solid, good radio (BX one is poor). With only a year to go, just
    enough time to start testdriving :-)
    
    

    
    As I understand it power steering is standard on the Golf range now,
    that is except for the lowest entry 1300cc petrol versions. 
    
    I believe there is a move among the European manufacturers to fit this
    as standard in the future.

what kind of rear blinds does the ZX have? Is is the same as the BX, which
is two seperate blinds, as I find it really annoying to have the driver
behind trying to peer through the �" gap in the middle, to see what is
going on...

    The ZX has a one-piece blind that extends across most of the rear
    window. The blind is ingeniously built into the parcel shelf.
    
    BTW, I can't see the fuss about these things. If nothing else, they
    dramatically cut down the amount of heat from the sun when the car is
    parked, not just when on the move (when presumably most people would
    have their ventilation going anyway, so heat need not build up too
    much).
    
    I would agree that they cut out a lot of light/ability to see through
    them clearly, but as someone else has pointed out, it means you're too
    close to the vehicle in front if you're relying on seeing THROUGH the
    vehicle to find out what's going on ahead. After all, they don't ban
    trucks and vans just because you can't see through them, do they?

Does anyone know the fuel comsumption figures are for the Golf GTD as opposed to
the Astra or Citroen.

From the "blurb-book" for the hatchback...Estate version slightly lower 
figures.

    I don't have figures for Golf GTD but 1.9CL TD (Umwelt) it is
    36/43.
