- just under 12,000 I recall. Sunroof is an option, but most other stuff like
alloys are standard.

| | I doubt if it's any lighter than a MK1 Golf either. Probably not much of
a scorcher, guess it has LOADS of torque low down though.

Saw one this morning, the thought of a G-lader driving that thing
through the front wheels is a bit frightening. I've driven the Corrado
g-60, and the torque steer is enormous.

Sorry, a German acronym for a Supercharger. That's where the "G" as in
    G-60 comes from.

G-lader, means the "G charger", as you say, it relates to the shape
of the supercharger, which is unconventional.

That's all I can think of right now. Sorry, but it _is_ called a

| 1446.16 | Group test coming soon | AYOV27::ISMITH | Off to Severance City | Tue Jun 25 1991 09:33 | 14 |
| | I am now awaiting next month's What Car with great interest. There
will be a test of the Polo G40 against the 205 GTi, the Fiesta XR2i
    etc. Should make interesting reading.

And in case there is any doubt left, the G in G-Lader relates to the
shape of the supercharger. There was a large flash advert in a
previous What Car for the Corrado G60 and Polo G40, explaining all
about the supercharger, how wonderful and well made it was, and how it
made the Polo feel like you were driving a 1.8 rather than a 1.3
engined car. Presumably they will say it is overpriced, but we'll just
have to wait and see what happens.

| 1446.17 | Further reading required | AYOV27::ISMITH | Off to Severance City | Thu Jul 18 1991 13:08 | 9 |
| | Well the magazine plopped through the letterbox today. I haven't had
time to read it properly yet, but the gist of it is that the Polo was
the best of the bunch in performance terms, but it was lacking in
braking power and suspension. They would rather have the 205 GTi, as
it gave the best blend of everything. The Fiesta XR2i was the worst of
them all (205, Polo, Nova, Mitsubishi, XR2), which is no great shock
    either. More later.

| 1446.18 | Irrationally, I still want one! | AYOV27::ISMITH | Off to Severance City | Thu Jul 18 1991 21:59 | 28 |
| | I've read more now. The G40 was tested against a Fiesta XR2i, a Nova
GSi, a 205 GTi 1.6 and a Mitsubishi Colt 1.8 GTi. As stated in .17
they though the 205 was the most complete of the cars, and at the other
end the Fiesta was the poorest.

The Polo was thought to be a good idea, not very well executed. Oddly
for a VW the build quality was suspect, explained by the fact that the
car comes from the Seat factory in Spain. The chassis wasn't thought
to be up to the job given it by the excellent engine, though there are
modifications to the basic Polo setup. The car didn't go round corners
as some of the test rivals, notably the 205, but was satisfactory.

The interesting thing was that the Polo was quicker in a straight line
than any of the others. Remember that it was up against a 1.8 and
three 1.6's, and yet it still left them for dust. Apparently the G40
engine still pulls strongly at its 6500 rev red line. Times for the
60-80 mph overtaking sprint are 7.3 seconds for the Fiesta, 5.9 for the
Colt, 7.1 for the 205, 6.6 for the Nova and 5.0 for the Polo. That is
in 3rd. Differences in 5th are more marked, 8.8 for the Polo against
13.9 for the Fiesta, for example. The G-Lader certainly appears to be
just what the doctor ordered. The Polo, in addition to this, was also
the most economical of the cars on test.

Overall it would perhaps be better to wait a while until the chassis is
attended to, but this car is a lusty little performer.

Last week I spotted a Golf GTI G60, it looked genuine, badges
on both front and rear, and if it goes like the G60 Corrado it should
put an end to the "who makes the quickest hot-hatch" question...!

Incidentally, you may be interested to know that DEC and VW
work very closely on a lot of projects, the Corrado being one, and
are a major DEC customer here in Germany.

| | I think the G60 Golf spotted was a VW Motorsport Special Edition. I
think it has about 180bhp and torque to match.

It is understatement in the extreme, having no driving lamps at the
front, five doors, luxury leather interior and only a little tiny badge
     at the rear.

     I would love one.
