    Re .14

    John,

There was a race on Easter Monday. Formula 3 topped the bill.

If you were expecting an F3000 race you are long out of touch. There
was only 1 F3000 race held on an Easter Monday and that must have been
5 (at least) years ago. Prior to that Thruxton ALWAYS held an F2 race
over Easter (practice Saturday/race Monday) and that was the meeting
that attracted the most spectators. (Memories of Stefan Bellof very
sideways in Maurer out of the chicane.)

Strangely Thruxton seems able to attract more spectators for a club
weekend now than it ever did in those days. It seemed that the crowd
only turned up for the one meeting of the year, whilst they come on
a regular basis (rain or shine) these days.

In case it goes unmentioned, Alan McNish and his team-mate were second
and third from slowest practicers. With the popularity of F3000 this
    secured them a solid non-qualification.

After promising testing this came as a great blow to both drivers and
team. Still, don't forget that Hill failed to qualify for his first
race last season and then bounced back in the second to lead
comfortably until a minor fault waylaid him.

Talking of Hill, the report in MN says that if the race had gone the
full distance he would almost certainly of been in with a chance of
victory as, of all the runners, only his tyres were in good condition.

The race took part in two halves after an accident. Oh dear, looks like
the F3000 boys are at it already.

| | Yes, Alan McNish had a hard time in Rome. During the 1st testing
session he almost destroyed the car. Second day he struggled with
settings and tyres.... DAMS teammate Aiello (F3000 beginner) qualified
on 2nd row which means that McNish could have managed pole position.
I think it was just bad luck.

| 1386.29 | Paul Warwick killed. | NEWOA::SAXBY |  | Mon Jul 22 1991 09:12 | 20 |
| | Very sad news.

Paul Warwick, who has been mopping up the British F3000 championship,
was killed yesterday when his car crashed into the Armco and burst into
flames at Oulton Park. He was posthumously awarded the race win
(presumably they stopped it and applied the positions from the previous
    lap).

This is very sad, as Derek's brother had finally got the equipment
needed to show his talent to the full and was making the other F3000
runners look very silly by winning every race so far. Unfortunately,
he'll never get the chance to prove himself against the European F3000
    boys.

As an aside, this makes me wonder about the safety of F3000 cars given
that they have to built down to a price (to a certain extent) and that
over the last few seasons there have been a number of very serious
accidents involving these types of car, which have led to injuries.

| | Yesterday was quite traumatic. We were timng at Lydden and late in the
day there were two quite bad shunts. Firstly a 2CV (why don't they ban
these?) went into the barrier exactly where a 2CV driver was killed a
few weeks back, and the driver went off to hospital unconscious, and
then 2 FF1600's went off at Cheshunts *very* hard, one driver being
taken off in a full brace. To come back and see the news about Paul
    Warwick was almost too much.

Paul was set for great things, and we had seen him drive quite a few
times, including a great drive for L/House at the B'ham Super Prix last
year, when we kept up with the leaders after being shunted off and
restarting last. He'll be very much missed.

Given that Senna survived a huge shunt on Thursday, one can only wonder
at the strength of the F1 cars, but it also shows the safety of the
circuits. I've never been to Oulton Park, but Lydden is frightening
with the lack of run off.

It's always hard when a driver is seriously injured or dies in he

professional classes. He was definately one of the up-and-coming men.

| | Autosport this week pay tribute to Paul Warwick. It is suspected that
the cause of the accident was front suspension failure. An Eyewitness
is reported to have said that one of the front wheels was off the
ground as Warwick attempted to turn into Knickerbrook. The car went
head on into the barrier, at almost full speed. Warwick was thrown from
the car which then burst into flames. The rest I think we all know.
