For me the Digital Lease Scheme is about to end - I am in the process
of accepting the redundancy plan. One of the elements of this is that
I hand back my leasemobile in early October.

Perhaps the great and the good experts in this conference could give
some thought to my problem - how do I replace it and where do I buy
it ( auction / second hand dealer / local ads) ?

    Here are some guidelines.

    1. The DGP ( Digital Goodbye Plan ) is quite generous, so initial
outlay is not a major problem. Assume not in excess of 6 K.

    2. I plan to get a job which has a company car - so whatever I buy
may need to be sold a few months after purchase. It should be
sellable easily and quickly, with minimum loss on outlay. In fact the
key factor is avoiding a loss on sale over a few months.

    3. Ideally the car should have minimal cost during ownership. I do
not wish to spend time underneath it or taking it to the garage.

    4. The current leasemobile is an XJ6 - I am not looking to continue
in that excellent style. Something way down market is acceptable.
Family is wife + 12 year. Wife has Renault 5 Campus - used for her
business so I need my own !

    5. In the circumstances luxury and performance are not key
requirements. On the other hand I do not want a rust heap.

| Hello Dave,

I would have thought a low milage D/E registration Volkswagen would
represent the least depreciation for a solidly built car.

If you get a newer car, the depreciation may be more noticable.
    Good luck.
    Rob.

| If you are mechanically minded and have your wits about you then a car
auction is a good bet for cheap reliable transport. plenty of
ex-company cars about in the cavalier/sierra class. Best advice is to
go during daytime in the week when the place is full of dealers and the
prices will be consistent. (A lot of public = higher prices)

I bought a car at auction, had it for 15 months did 23,000 miles and
sold it privately for only 600 less than I paid for it.

| You've timed it well. New, and even more so, used car prices are
at record low levels at present. It's a buyers market.
