I wonder if any of you have come across this problem or perhaps heard of someone who has:.... I have recently taken delivery of a Ford Sierra GLS. Its got the new ford engine in it, ie. the Double Overhead Cam 2.0 litre 4 cylinder unit. The problem I'm experiencing is alternator & water pump drive belt slip (historically known as the Fan belt) when the engine is cold or wet. You instantly know when its slipping 'coz it make an horrible screeching sound. It happens especially when changing down through the gears, or when you place torque resistance in the alternator by switching on any gizzmos (eg window demisters...) I'm already on my second belt and the garage have adjusted it twice, but its still as bad. Having a look at it the other day there seems to be a design problem, in that although the belt is of a poly-V design for increased contact area, the angle of wrap-around of the belt around the drive pulley on the end of the crankshaft is so shallow as to be useless. A segment of only about a tenth of the circumference of the drive pulley is actually in contact with the belt. A colleague of mine is also experiencing similar probs. The engine came out in July 89, and is available is both carburetted and injected versions. It is used by Ford in both the Sierra and Granada. Are you a member of the Ford Talkback scheme?
If you are ring them. They are seem to be very helpful to company car
drivers.
Alternatively bend the leasing companies ear. I did this when
I had a problem getting a persistent fault on my GLS fixed. They
insisted that Zenith Reading (Groan) call in Ford troubleshooters.
Ford fixed it in 30 minutes.

This seems to be fairly common.
It happened for six years on my XR2, but after the first five you
get used to it. During that time I used to hear the same noise
from other cars, particullarly when they were pulling away from
standstill in the wet (at first, it sounds like a clutch problem).
Let us know if you find a cure.

to set the record straight................
I took the car in again to the ford main dealer and they placed a new
fan belt (this was the 3rd) and a new alternator bracket (apparently
the original was the wrong one!!??)
BUT! this made no difference whatsoever.
SO in desperation I took it to an another Ford agent (Not a main
dealer) And because the outfit was small I talked to the mechanic
direct.
He borrowed a ford parts micrfiche and listed against my model were
two fanbelts, one 2.5cm longer than the other!
So he ordered and fitted the shorter one (now the 4th to be fitted in
2 months) and cleaned the grooves on the pulley ('coz they had filled
up with burnt rubber due to the slipping)
AND NOW IT NO LONGER SLIPS!! (muted hooray)
So the underdog shines through!! I restrain from commenting on the
main dealer.
