| | Did .0 ever fix the problem? I have a similar problem on my wife's '88 Metro and
haven't yet found anything that will fix it. I too, have put suppression cap's
on the coil and alternator and checked earthing of unit and aerial. I haven't
yet changed the HT leads ('cos they certainly have the word "suppression" on
the insulation and I figured that a car this new should have fully suppressed
leads as standard? The plug caps are flexible rubber rather than the rigid
bakelite-type stuff I've seen before - would these be sufficiently suppressed?
It's definitely an ignition problem as the crackle (or "tick") changes frequency
with engine revs.
How did you fix it, .0?

Thanks, I don't have the Haynes manual but do have a book which gives all the
usual things to try (just like .0 did). I'm really trying to find out:
1. Did .0 fix the problem and how? (since I've also tried the things he did)
2. Before I buy new HT leads does anyone know whether the rubber-capped type
   are/are not suppressed?

| | I used to have a similar problem with radio reception with a cheap
Radio/Cassette in my first Golf. When I put a more expensive
Radio/Cassette in the same car with exactly the same wiring and aerial,
    ALL the interference went.

| | When you suppress a dynamo (not an alternator) which terminal do you
    connect the capacitor to?

The one connected to the brushes. I think that would be the thicker one
    (assuming there are 2 wires).
