    There's a clearly-stated policy _against_the provision of cellphones,
unless you can prove that it's going to benefit Digital in some
way. Considering the price of them, and the fact that everybody
would want one, not really surprising !

| | Not really relevant to DEC - yet, but maybe of interest to some of you.

My sister's company fits carphones to all company cars allocated to
women. The company's argument is that it doesn't want them having to
walk to emergency telephones if they break down. Any work-related
benefits for those who travel a lot are considered a welcome benefit.

Sexist perhaps, but apparently it's very comforting to know the phone's
there when you're travelling along a motorway at night in winter.

| | I agree this is a sensible idea. However, I'd be a bit cheesed off
if I was a bloke working for this company and i'd broken down miles
    from a phone.

Wouldn't it be fairer to fit 'phones to ALL company cars ?

I would think that it would be a case of sex discrimination, and the
company could probably be taken to court for it. BUT, for a company
with maybe limited funds, it would be a pity if they then decided that
no-one would get a phone because of fear of litigation. Unfortunately,
it does seem to be that women are more likely to be at risk.

I suspect that using the phone to call for assistance after a breakdown is not
a strict business use under the Inland Revenue definitions, especially as the
company doesn't see the business need to fit phones to men's cars, and as such
these women will be liable to pay tax on the total cost (including fitting) of
the phones.
