The way i see it is this, agreed more should be done but speed
sells and cars are being made to go faster and handle better
all the time. Who would have thought that 15 years ago that
a plane could travel at the speed of sound,so if you think
cars are fast now, what are they going to do years from now.

There will always be fast drivers & slow drivers
the cars will improve with time but will the drivers?
Any fool can put their foot down, but not every fool can
control it {speed can be used or abused to get out of trouble or
in trouble, most of the time it gets people in it}.

                    regards
a self confessed speed freak, but still concerned.

Many military aircraft could comfortably exceed double the speed of
sound 15 years ago. In fact Concorde is a lot older than that!

Having said that, I agree with your point. There is already a
self-imposed BHP limit (or is it MPH?) in Japan and many of the big
BMs and Mercs have their top speed restricted. I wonder if GM's
decision to let the Lotus Carlton run to it's unrestricted speed will
see a glut of super-fast big saloons? It is interesting to look at the
way the sportscar market is following the racing car market in terms of
speed. Only recently at Le Mans the 250 mph barrier was broken, but
already a number of road cars exist with 200 mph top speed. The result
of the Le Mans 250 mph was to break the straight into 3 bits, but was
is going to stop the arrival of the 200 mph 4 door saloon?

                     I wrote no .96 but there was no .97 but a .98.
What i want to know is what happened to .97 .

The age of Concorde was just a rough estimate, the
point i was trying to make was that years ago, cars
machinery, household items things that are taken for
granted now, would have been laughed or mocked at years
ago.just a point, who's to say that maybe time travel
will not be possible in a few years from now, some of
you's might be laughing now but will you or i be here
           when it eventually happens.
                          Thanks for the replies.

| | Here in Finland Volvos and Volvo-drivers are not considered as the
unpolite and dangerous oneson the roads.

Here the most aggressive ones are BMWs, Saab Turbos and some GTIXYZ
Toyotas. They *must* pass you no matter how fast you drive etc.

Most dangerous ones are the Ladas which are driven by older gentlemen
wearing hats. They do not have mirrors, they drive all days on the center
lane of a motorway 20 mph slower than the rest of the traffic etc.

Do you know why so many Volvos have sunroofs?

During war you can easily install a machine-gun there and so you have
    the world's fastest tank ;-) .

(I am a Volvo freak, so I know what I'm talking about...)

I've added another to this list...

It's "Arghhh. Not THAT Cavalier SRi again!"

This bloke drives up the A339 at 40 mph in a G-reg racing red Cavalier
SRi and it drives me mad. Fortunately I got past him today, but I've
been stuck at the back of the queue behind him on more than one
occasion. Sure it's his perogative to choose his speed and 40 isn't
excessive for sections of that road, but he makes no concession to
those of us who might like to go 45, like hugging the kerb or slowing
down on the few sections you can get past.

What I really wonder about is why he chose such a car when he really
has no need of anything more exciting than a 950 Fiesta or a 1.1 Astra?

The Cavalier SRi has a lot of poke combined with a very wide power
band. Mind you it torque steers horribly, the power steering has
absolutely zero feel and it doesn't like to change direction. All
of which, I suppose, combines to make it quite exciting. It can
certainly surpass 40 mph on the A329...

| | As a Fiesta 1.1 driver who hits the M1/M25/M4/A33 twice a day, I would
certainly say that 80mph in a Ford Fiesta is certainly more exciting
than 80mph in a Cavalier SRi.

Of course it would..because you would be expecting the engine to blow
    up any minuite.

Whereas the SRi driver would just be happily cruising along with
minimal engine noise and your foot just resting on the accelerator.
