Don't know if he'll go that far but a call won't hurt.  I had some trees cut
down early January.  I highly recommend him.  Not the cheapest in the world
but fully insured, knows what he's doing and has  the cherry picker.

Gus Dote in Stow is a Tree surgeon/sprayer.  Seems professional.  
Tough to get his attention on trimmimg jobs, but if you can get him 
over, he seems very knowledgable.  Tell him I sent you.

(also the only one in the area who has the equipment for spraying TALL 
trees, the lawn services only spray up to 15' or so.

    We had 5 trees cut down last year by Flagg Tree Service in Ayer.
    There were 3 tall pines that they cut down and removed and 2 hickorys
    that they cut down and cut into 16" sections for us to split later.
    They moved the hickory sections out back for us, chipped up all
    the brush for us to use as mulch and left the yard very clean. The
    total cost for this was $800, broken down into $500 ($100 per tree)
    and $300 for removal, chipping, and cutting up the hickorys. We
    were very pleased with them. We live in Townsend which isn't too
    far from Ayer, but it doesn't hurt to call and ask for a free estimate.
    Another thing to add is that our 3 pines were hanging all over the
    power lines. They are fully insured and are used by the state quite
    a bit.

    I had a large dead Elm that was hanging over my house and garage.
    I got two estimates just to cut the tree down. It required a cherry
    picker and a lot of ropes. Flagg Tree of Ayer estimated $1200. Assabet
    Tree of Maynard estimated $350 for the same exact job. I had Assabet
    do the job. It took two guys about two hours to get it down. I was
    very happy with the job that they did. 

    We just had Flagg Tree of Ayer remove 3 trees, including 2 approx.
    40 foot pines and a 20 foot dead tree.  They gave us a prompt estimate
    and came the next day.  Cost of cutting down and removing the trees
    was $200.  They left the yard very clean and free of branches. 
    I'd recommend them.

    To second a previous noter, Flagg Tree of Ayer came out to do
    some tree removal in Nashua for us. Matt's price was several
    hundred dollars less than any of the quotes I was able to get
    from the local tree-cutters. We were real happy with the job.

    Tree removal/surgery - Paul Nolan of Paul's tree in West Boylston
    			   (617)-835-2300.  He limbed, cut up, and hauled
    			   away two 60 foot Norway Spruce for us this
    	    		   winter at $200. each.  He'll do whatever
    			   you like - cut them down and leave the rest
    			   to you, cut them up for firewood, cut them
    			   up and haul them away - your choice.  Since
    			   Spruce isn't a very good firewood we had
    			   him take them away.  Very nice job, and he
    			   shows up when he says he will.
    
    Stump removal - Paul (above) brought in Len Hutt from Westboro, MA 
    		    (617)-366-5567 to remove the stumps from the two
    		    trees (21 or 22 inches in diameter each) for $160.
    		    plus removed two other 8 to 10 inch diameter stumps
    		    for free.  He charges $4. per inch which I understand
    		    is about the right price for this kind of work.
    		    Again, a real nice job and they show up when they
    		    say they will (weather permitting, of course).
    
    I'll use them again if I need to have this type of work done.

Tom has been our next door neighbor in Acton for 16 years. He
recently moved to Gardner but commutes rte 2 to his day job in
metro Boston where he is a crew supervisor for one of the big
tree companies in the area. He is completely honest, reliable,
and competent. He has taken down several of our trees.

    Jesse Cotty just removed 5 trees for me, and he did a great job
    at a reasonable price.  These were very large pines near the house
    and power line.  He's in Chelmsford, Mass. (508)250-1353.
    
    He has a dump truck and chipper capable of reducing 12-inch diameter
    logs to a pile of chips.  The people thinking of renting a chipper
    might want to hire him instead.

    Another recommendation for Trees Are Us (as mentioned in 2015.6)
    out of Milford.  I had them come in and do a ton of pruning, drop
    some fairly large trees (and remove stumps), and thin out a wooded
    area behind my house.
    
    I highly recommed them; they did a great job.  In checking around,
    I don't think that their price was too out of line.  650.00 for
    an entrie day including 3 men, a cherry picker, a dump truck, and
    a mega-chipper.  Hauled away all chips and scrap brush (you can
    keep the chips if you want them), and was FULLY INSURED.

    We just had about 15 large trees cut down around our house.  The
    company that did the work is New England Tree Service.  I would highly
    recommend them.  When gathering quotes, one company gave an estimate of
    $2000, another gave a quote of $3000, and NE Tree Service gave a quote
    of $1200 (which included grinding 7 stumps).  They also were able to
    drop these large trees without damaging fruit trees and other obstacles
    right near the trees being cut.  NE Tree Service is located in
    Billerica, and their number is: 667-7480

Does anyone have experience with Fredette's Tree Service in Nashua, NH?  I
have gotten quotes from them as well as the highly-recommended
Trees Are Us, and though I am impressed with the latter, their quote was
half again as much as that from Fredette's, and I wonder if it's worth it.
I was favorably impressed with the knowledge of Maurice Fredette, but
would like comments from someone who has used his service.  Please send

I ended up going with Fredette's, and I'm very pleased with the result.  His
bid was the lowest by far of the three I got, and as for "all the
equipment", it was all necessary for the very difficult job he was doing.
Most of the trees he took down had to be cut into sections and lowered
individually - I think there was only one tree he could actually let fall.

I had originally planned on using Trees Are Us, even though their bid was
50% higher than Fredette's, but I was put off by their knocking the
competition, and I got some very positive recommendations for Fredette.

I had five large pines removed in the front of the house, and eight
assorted trees in the back.  He had to be careful not to damage the
Japanese maples in the front lawn, or hit the house, which two of the
trees were right next to.  All the trees came down quickly and properly,
with no damage at all to the surroundings.  He used a "cherry picker" for
some of the more difficult trees.  He also chipped the smaller logs and
branches, and used a log crane to remove the larger ones.  Then he
brought in a stump grinder to grind the stumps.

One difference between Fredette and some of the others is that he doesn't
just haul the wood to the dump.  The chips he provides to a farm which
makes some sort of mulch from them, and larger logs he gives to a
sawmill.  Hardwoods are taken by his sons who run a firewood business.  This
saves the rather exorbitant dumping fees that others will pass along, and
is better for the environment as well.

My neighbors were all impressed by the professional manner in which Maurice
("Morris") Fredette and his crew worked, and all agreed that the yard
looks much better.

If all you're doing is knocking some trees down, and you don't care where
they fall or what gets damaged, then I'm sure you can find someone cheaper.
But I don't think you'll find anyone better at the job than Fredette's,
and I will certainly recommend them to anyone.

    I'm not sure if this guy is a "tree surgeon" or not but if you have a
    treed lot and want to sell off some of the standing timber, read on.
    
    Kimball Moore, not sure of the company he runs, does forest management.
    I don't have his number handy but I'll get it and post it later.
    I had him do my property in W. Brookfield about 3.5 years ago. He had 
    me go with him to "spot" the property line since part of ours was poorly 
    marked. He had a compass that broke directions down to degrees. He had me 
    supply a plot plan and just went off of the corrdinates on the map. He 
    wants to make double sure he doesn't cut on someone elses property. They 
    cut an access road down the west border of the lot about 10 feet in from 
    the line, then every 200-250 feet he would cut a spur into the woods where
    he would be cutting. He has a skidder with a 200ft cable winch on it so he
    can cover quite a bit of territory. I feel he did an excellent job and I
    think he payed us fairly for the wood. He asked me if I wanted to keep
    the crowns of the hardwoods and I said yes 'cause we were going to heat
    with wood once we built, otherwise they will haul them off and sell
    them for firewood. After 3.5 years you can't even tell he was there
    except for the tops which I haven't cleaned up yet. 
    
    Kimball gave a whole list of references, he took my wife and I to a
    couple of other work sites where he was cutting to let us see first hand,
    the kind of work he did. He pulled all of the permits, and posted them at
    the entrance of the property.
    
    A couple of times we went out just to watch and were quite impressed.

    Is Tom's Trees in West Boylston (the one mentioned a dozen or so
    replies ago) still in business and recommended?  I need someone to
    prune an old apple tree in my backyard in Worcester.

    Fontaine, Marlboro, Mass. did a good job and was much cheaper and more
    responsive than Greeno when we had an emergency situation several years
    ago after a storm.

    Tree person recommendation:  We recently had a 50-60 foot tall pine
    removed from our backyard.  It was in the center of the yard (capable
    of hitting lots of things) and only 8-10 feet from our garage. 
    Estimates I received were generally 550-650 for tree cutting, tree
    removal and stump removal.
    
    Enter Dave Brigham of West Brookfield.  Dave drove by, gave an estimate
    of 300 for cutting the tree & grinding the stump.  Bingo! I said. 
    Most amazingly, he did the job all by himself in a day and a half! 
    Using a ladder!  You couldn't pay me enough for that of course but he
    did a great job, cleaned up all the remnants and hauled them away. 
    This was a very big tree.  We gave him 325.00 for the fantastic job. 
    
    I recommend him most heartily.  His number is 508-867-5431 work or
    508-867-2027 home....card says tree cutting, brush chipping and stump

    down a LARGE tree and an overhang swiftly, neatly and at a fair price
    for Southern New Hampshire.

    He also does pruning, fertilization, cabling, hedge and shrub care.

Hi, 

For the last three months I've been going through the process of finding 
someone to drop a huge oak tree that was in my front yard and leaning
over my neighbors house.

I read the notes in the conference on choosing the correct person to do the
job.  Here's my experiences.

1) If you don't need the work done immediately, don't call for the estimate
   until the middle of the winter, when they aren't busy.  I told them that
   they could drop the tree any time in the next six months, and that my
   bottom line was cost, but it didn't seem to impact the estimates I got.

2) Call a lot of people for estimates.  They are free and the prices I got 
   ranged from 850 dollars to 425 dollars for the exact same work.  Most will
   estimate about 150 dollars lower to leave the tree in 8 foot sections 
   versus taking it down and away.  I got 8 estimates.

3) Make sure that you are home when they come to look at the tree.  If you are
   home when they make the estimate, you can dicker with them to throw in
   other tree branches, etc. on your property that need to be removed.  The
   person who did my work also pruned another tree in the yard for me.  You
   can miss a lot of extra perks by not being home to talk to them.  Also,
   I wasn't home during one estimate, and ended up getting a quote to chop 
   down the neighbor's tree.  :)

I ended up going with Frank's tree service in Worcester.  His quote was over
100 dollars lower than the next highest, plus he threw in pruning some 
branches on another tree in the front yard.  No more hitting my head when I
mow the lawn!  It was interesting to watch them work.  They had to tie ropes
to sections of the tree and pivot them from the neighbor's house to my lawn
during the cut.  Otherwise, the branches would have dropped onto the 
neighbor's roof...big branches.  

Frank also sells firewood, so they chipped, cut and split the tree up on the
spot, and halled it all away.  They did a great job cleaning up after 
themselves too.  Frank's number is 757-7052 if anyone else wants to get an
estimate from him.

    	This "having to pay" for tree removal seems a little odd to me.
    Perhaps I'm reading more into some of the ads than what's there, but
    I've come across a few ads where companies will, worst case, come in
    and remove trees and the wood itself is payment for the services. Best
    case, a company will pay YOU for allowing them to come in and remove
    trees.
    
    	I'll be calling one of a couple companies that do this, at some
    point later this year. One of the companies that does this is run/owned
    by the same guy that does the wood carvings with a chain saw at the
    Deerfield Fair.

    The difference, I believe, is that where the tree can not be felled
    by the regular methods you will pay for the needed skill.
    
    I've taken down a number of trees myself, but, I payed to have a person
    take down a tree that was leaning into the front of my house, and was 
    a good size one.

    depends on the job. It's one thing to let someone clear land in
    exchange for the timber. It's a lot different if you have one tree,
    hanging over houses, garages, etc, that needs to be taken down very
    carefully, maybe even a piece at a time.
    
    The worth of the lumber in that one tree is not going to offset the
    labor, equipment, insurance and trasportation costs.

Also, as has been said before in this conference, many mills will not buy timber
from residential property.  The spikes, nails, and wire rope that may be
imbedded in the tree are guaranteed to ruin very expensive saw mill blades.

happened some time ago, I'm told, but I just now found out about it.  The

I haven't yet used this company myself, though I've had the owner,
Bill Kuchraski, bid a couple of times.  I think he's knowledgable about
how to best preserve trees, a bit costly for just tree removal.  He also has
a bad habit of bad-mouthing the competition which annoys me.  (My wife calls
him "Bill's Pretty Slanderous Tree Service".)

            We tried (twice now, more in the future) Bill Kucharski
            (formerly Arbor East, Trees Are Us ) and are *very* pleased
    with 
            his work.  He is registered arborist (which means he really
    does care
            about trees and will only do what he sees as good for the
            tree and surrouding foliage) and a professional (always called
            back, always prompt, left the yard *cleaner* than when he
            had arrived, answered any dumb question politely).  His
            rates are very good/competitive and he is true to his word.
            Guess I'm just a tree-hugging liberal, but it was nice to
            see someone who really did care about which trees he was to
            fell and made sure there was a good reason for it.

            As per the previous noter, he bad mouths the competition 
            because he doesn't like what he sees.  Neighbors across the
            street clear cut all the trees down in their yard.  It was
            terrible to see and now their place looks awful (no trees).
            He thought it was pretty dumb, and we heartily agreed.
    

Badmouthing the competition is bad for business.  He badmouths everyone, even
arborists just as qualified as he is.  I really didn't care for his attitude,
even though I recognized that he probably did excellent work.  However, he is
far from the ONLY such qualified arborist in the area and I have worked
with several others who do good work and have good business sense as well.

    highly professional and responsive: provided a quote within several
    days (price was very reasonable), returned phone messages, did work when 
    scheduled, and cleaned up all debris (chipper).
    
    Tom works with one other person. All work is done by tree-climbing.
    No arial buckets or cranes. He's flexible about whether he takes the 
    wood or leaves it. 
    
    Tom will travel within the greater Maynard area....Hudson, Maynard,
    Sudbury, Marlboro, Boxboro, Acton.
